Petition received by HBC October 2016 expressed concern at housing policy in Hastings
The following petition supported by 85 signatures was received on 10 October 2016 Re: Urgent Action Required re Housing We believe urgent action is necessary on Housing in and around Hastings. We are tired of hearing about affordable housing that we can’t afford. We don’t think there is any affordable housing. We want council homes to be available when people need them, and we want them to be secure homes. We have terrible problems with the cost and insecurity of private rentals, we wonder why space is left vacant around the town, and buildings left empty, when there are so many homeless people. We don’t know why landlords are allowed to sit back and collect money when housing is poor quality and rents are high. We believe families cannot grow and thrive if they are permanently dependent on short term lettings, with no guarantee of keeping to the same locality or keeping the kids in the same school. We can’t cope with the fees, rules and lack of transparency that we get from letting agencies. We need urgent action from you, our elected leaders.
Over the coming years HBC is likely to make available more land for developers to build "affordable homes" in the town but it is not known whether those signing the October 2016 petition shown above are capable of funding a typical mortgage of £87,000 and paying other ongoing recurring costs for a 35% share of a home, whilst Council / housing association homes remain scarce to existing residents of the town. Will more shared ownership schemes built on Hastings Borough Council land solve the homes problem of existing residents of Hastings?
