Elizabeth Mason Wing Buchanan Hospital St Leonards on Sea
Elizabeth Mason Ward of the Buchanan Hospital was designed by architect Henry Ward ARIBA and like the Havelock public house in Hastings had some Royal Doulton Tiles depicting nursery rhymes suitable for a childrens ward were installed. The hospital closed 1997 and developers wanted to demolish.
This link to the Geograph website shows a photograph of the finished restoration proving that a building does not need to be listed to warrent restoration and reuse if the planners have the courage to insist that developers do not insist on demolition of everything on a site.
When the Elizabeth Mason wing of the Buchanan Hospital lay empty and unused the Royal Doulton tiles installed in the wards for children disappeared presumeably stolen. Below are Royal Doulton Tiles that are identical to those that went missing and are currently on display at the Conquest Hospital St Leonards on Sea. There are six tiles shown on the walls of the hospital.
